Official Visits Vs. Unofficial Visits

Official Visits

WHAT ARE OFFICIAL VISITS?

Official visits are visits to college campuses paid for by the institution itself. They are limited to 48 hours and begin the moment you get on campus. You must be invited on an official visit by a coach at that school.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN AN OFFICIAL VISIT?

Transportation to and from campus (airfare for parents is not included) lodging either on campus or in your hotel, meals and tickets to sporting events on campus.
WHEN CAN I START TAKING OFFICIAL VISITS?

Starting the first day of your senior year of high school, you can begin taking official visits.  No official are allowed during dead periods.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF IM OFFERED AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO A COLLEGE?

You can assume are higher on the coach's recruitment list, however, DO NOT assume this means you have a place on the roster yet!  Coaches use this time to assess your character and personality before deciding to sign you.

NCAA DIVISION I & DIVISION II RULES:

You are allowed no more than FIVE visits to Division I and/or Division II schools combined and you can only take one visit per school.

Schools will pay for 1 round trip transportation (not including parent or guardian airfare) 3 meals a day for you and your parents and admission to select campus athletic event.
NAIA DIVISION III, NAIA & JUCO RULES:

There is no limit to the number of official visits you can take to Division III, NAIA or JUCO schools, though you can only take one visit per school.

Unofficial Visits

WHAT ARE UNOFFICIAL VISITS?

Unofficial visits are vists to colleges that are not paid for by the insitution.  You can visit a college at any time starting as soon as your freshman year of highschool, as long as you pay your own way.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN AN UNOFFICIAL VISIT?

During an unofficial visit a coach can provide you tickets to 3 home sporting events that are under $100-you can also view practices.  You can stay overnight with a team member and the coach is allowed to provide transportation to off-site location.
WHEN CAN I START TAKING UNOFFICIAL VISITS?

Unlike official visits, you can begin taking unofficial visits at any time starting your Freshman year of high school!  You are allowed to take as many unofficial visits as you would like.  Note that you cannot talk to a coach during an unofficial visit if it is during a dead period.
NCAA DIVISION I, II AND III, NAIA & JUCO UNOFFICIAL VISIT RULES:

You are allowed to take as many unofficial visits as you would like, though only one visit per school or institution is allowed.
WHY TAKE AN UNOFFICIAL VISIT?

Unofficial visits have become a major part of recruiting.  Taking an unofficial visit allows you to establish a relationship with the oach and evaluate the sports program and school to see if it's a good fit for you.  College coaches are actively recruiting players during your freshman and sophomore years and unofficial visits are a good way for them to get to know you.

NOTE: Sports Thread provides virtual tours all over the nation to save you the cost of a trip.
